When you are on the move you want to have your music with you. Your car is fitted with a CD and Radio but you don’t want to keep changing CD’s and you forget to take the ones you want with you.
The answer to this conundrum is an FM Transmitter. A handy little device that plugs into your cigar lighter and connects to your MP3 player and plays your music through your in-car radio.
At a fraction of the price to install a car MP3 player, this is truly a great idea.
It’s easily portable so you can take it with you when you leave the car and it’s really easy to use. It’s also very affordable.
In road tests it has to be said that some FM Transmitters perform better than others. The essential part of these little gadgets is that they pick up the radio frequency to play your music continuously. Unfortunately several of the models tested dropped the frequency and stopped playing.
The models tested were Belkins new Tunecast 3, iStuff’s iCast, Griffins iTrip Auto and Doros RadioStreamer FMT 300.
The TuneCast 3 performed well, with great sound quality and good reception although it did hiss a bit when no music was playing. The overall look of the Tunecast 3 was good and they provide a stick on mount to put on your dash. It was easy to use but the screen was a little hard to see in certain lights.
The iStuff’s iCast Autoscan FM was a little disappointing, the sound quality was not as good as the TuneCast3 and the reception kept dropping. It worked better the nearer it was to the aerial.
The Griffin iTrip Auto was superb, the sound quality was good and the reception didn’t suffer either. However you can only use it with an iPod and the wire really got in the way.
The Doros RadioStreamer FMT 300 got down to a bad start. The sound quality was poor and it kept dropping the frequency but again, that was improved the closer it was to the aerial. It wasn’t particularly easy to use.
Overall, the opinion was that the Belkin Tunecast 3 and the Griffin iTrip Auto were the best of the group tested.
